Transportation Winter Operations Update
Posted Date: 11/10/2017

Winter has firmly set in for the season and Transportation Crews are set and ready to go.

“Staff, Equipment and materials are all in place”, says Robert Carroll, Transportation Services Manager for the

City. The City Snow Removal Fleet includes:
   • 6 Snow Haul Trucks, plus up to 18 additional Snow Haul Trucks from the Private Sector
   • 7 City Graders, plus 5 additional Graders from the Private Sector dedicated to the Residential Snow Plowing    Program
   • 6 Front End Loaders with angle blades plus 5 additional Loaders from the Private Sector dedicated to the   Residential Snow Plowing Program
   • 6 Sanders/Plows, plus 1 for laneways
   • 2 Snow Blowers
   • 2 sidewalk plows
   • 1 bus stop plow
   • 2 Backhoe’s
“We employ over 60 full-time and seasonal staff plus up to 20 Contractor Staff during the winter season”. Crews are on shift around the clock on weekdays and weekends are covered by scheduled sanding units with other weekend needs on an overtime basis.
Motorists are advised as always to use extreme caution when approaching any snow removal equipment and staying at least 15 metres behind is the safest place to be.

Green Pylon Program:

New this season is the Green Pylon Program
“The green pylon is placed by the resident at the end of their driveway to identify it as one that is on the program”
It replaces the old method of City staff marking the snow with spray paint
This is a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to identify these locations.

Parking Bans:
Once again this season the City will be declaring parking bans on permanent snow routes when deemed necessary for efficient snow removal.
Parking bans when declared are in effect from November 15th until April 15th on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. until the declaration is ended.

The Residential Snow Clearing Program:
The program starts when initiated by the Transportation Manager and occurs when 10 cm of snow has accumulated.
Once initiated, crews will be in your area the day before your garbage day. It usually takes 2 weeks to get through all residential areas so if crews have not cleared your street the first week, they will be there the next.
