Grande Prairie residents can tune into upcoming 2018 City Budget discussions by accessing www.cityofgp.com/webcast.

The budget will be examined over three days, starting at 9 a.m. on November 15. Deliberations are also open to the public in Council Chambers at City Hall. The agenda can be found at www.cityofgp.com/agendas.

The municipality operates on a four-year budget. Council does a review each fall to address emerging issues and to ensure the City has maintained its focus on priorities.

Involving Residents

"We're pleased to offer residents the opportunity to take in our budget discussions to get a first-hand understanding of our decision making," says Mayor Bill Given. "It's another example of why local government is the most transparent order of government in Canada."

During the proceedings, results of the recent Citizen Budget survey will be shared.

Budget Process

The agenda includes an economic forecast, a review of the 2015-2018 Council strategy, budget accomplishments from the past two years, and a summary of the 2018 Budget Plan – projected operating and capital expenditures. Council will examine flagged items from standing committees. Administration is presenting three scenarios – tax increases of zero per cent and three per cent and the implications of maintaining the budget as is.

Council deliberates on the budget sitting as Council Committee of the Whole. Once a tax implication is determined, the budget is anticipated to be on the December 4 agenda for approval.

In 2017, the Operating Budget is $163,397,739 while the municipality has $34,194,538 for capital expenditures.
