Windrow Pilot Program Launches December 1, 2017
Posted Date: 12/1/2017
The City of Grande Prairie’s Windrow Clearing Pilot Project begins on December 1, 2017.

City Crews will clear all windrows previously left across driveway entrances during residential snow plowing service.

Transportation Services has spent the past week experimenting with different equipment options to determine the method that works best from both a cost and efficiency perspective while still maintaining the two week standard for residential areas.

The intent of the program is to remove the larger windrows of snow at the driveway entrance that could prohibit a vehicle from coming or going from the residence. The windrow clearing pilot project expects to see the majority of the snow from driveway entrances but residents may still need to clear a much smaller area.

“Crews are using large equipment and want to minimize the risk of damage to the hard surface underneath,” saying Robert Carroll, Manager of Transportation Services. “Staff and contractors are working diligently through the challenges of clearing approximately 8,500 driveways” says Carroll. “Crews need to clear roadways wide enough to allow for traffic flow by creating snow banks along sidewalks without blocking fire hydrants, utility boxes, mailboxes and intersections and when vehicles park along the road, it makes clearing and storing snow more difficult and roads or driveways may not receive service.”

Residents are reminded that residential snow plowing, when initiated, occurs the day before your scheduled Aquatera garbage day. Transportation asks that vehicles are removed from roadways before 8 a.m. on scheduled plowing days to ensure equipment has sufficient room to operate. Residents previously registered for Green Pylon Program no longer need to place their cone at the end of their driveway. The program will be reviewed at the end of the 2017/2018 winter and a decision to implement a new procedure into the Snow and Ice Control Policy made prior to the next season.
