“Racism in a Digital Society” Presentation and Networking Event Announced

The City of Grande Prairie’s Community Social Development department is hosting Edmonton-based speaker Irfan Chaudhry for a presentation titled “Racism in a Digital Society” to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21.

Date: Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Time: 7:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.

Location: Collins Recital Hall, Grande Prairie Regional College (10726 106 Ave.)

Cost: $10. Tickets are available to purchase at the Community Social Development office (10030 102 Ave.). A limited number will also be available at the door.

The one-hour presentation examines the new “climate of hate” that has developed online that is seen at both local and global levels. Using current examples, the interactive presentation will explore the varied contributing factors that lead people to express hateful views while empowering participants to counter hate when they see it- both online and offline.

A networking session takes place after the presentation with a selection of light appetizers.

About the Speaker

Racism in a Digital Society 2018


Irfan Chaudhry is a criminology lecturer at MacEwan University a
nd Director for their Office ofHuman Rights, Diversity and Equity. His research on racism and social media ha

s appeared in various academic publications, including the International Journal of Communication. He has worked on a number of anti-racism projects and is currently working on a "hate incident" mapping project with the Alberta Hate Crimes committee ( www.StopHateAB.ca ).

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was declared by the United Nation as a way to encourage people worldwide to continue to make strides to eliminate racial discrimination in all forms. The 2018 theme is to promote tolerance, inclusion, unity and respect for diversity the context of combating racial discrimination.
