For the month of November, the Grande Prairie Museum is commemorating Remembrance Day and the 100 anniversary of the end of World War One in collaboration with the South Peace Regional Archives with a special exhibit. To honour these events, they have created a memorial poppy tree to introduce the museum’s military exhibit.
The memorial poppy tree recognizes local WWI veterans by displaying identification tags, or “dog tags”, of military personnel, created by the South Peace Regional Archives. Visitors are invited to select a tag from the tree and visit the ‘Soldier’s Memorial’ page at http://southpeacearchives.org/ to learn more about that particular veteran.100 veterans will be profiled in total, representing approximately 10% of the WWI veterans who came from the Grande Prairie area.
The Grande Prairie Museum is open 7 days a week and has free admission. The memorial poppy tree will be on display until November 30, 2018.
The Grande Prairie Museum, South Peace Regional Archives and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54 have also collaborated on an exhibit on display at the Legion to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the end of WWI. The exhibit features the museum’s Remnant photo exhibit, photos from the archives and a display of the Legion uniform. The Legion is open Tuesdays through Saturdays and is located at 9912 101 Avenue.
