1950s Focus of MGD Entertainment

Monday, June 16, 2008 8:10:00 AM

It’s Frank Sinatra … no … it’s Nat King Cole …or is that Jerry Lee Lewis? Or Tommy James?

Actually, when singer/songwriter/impersonator Stan Foster takes to the stage at Municipal Government Day on Wednesday, June 18, it will be all of them, and more as the entertainment at this annual event focuses on the 1950s.

The yearly municipal celebration begins at 4 p.m., rain or shine, and runs until 7 p.m. in the west parking lot of the Canada Games Arena. If the weather is inclement, activities will move inside the facility.

Foster has entertained audiences for more than 35 years, performing at clubs, casinos and conventions. He was the feature performer at the April 23 DownTown Association’s Administrative Professionals’ Day appreciation lunch.

The 1950s fun doesn’t stop there. Civic leaders from across the region will participate in Municipal Olympics in competitions such as sack races, hoola-hoop, and hop-scotch.

The Grande Prairie Marching Band will perform its final show before embarking on a tour of China to participate in a series of pre-Olympic cultural events.

The ever-popular barbecue begins at 4 p.m. A wide variety of entertainment includes face painting, inflated jumping attractions, balloon twisting, and a magician.

Various City departments, along with Aquatera, will have indoor and outdoor displays and equipment demonstrations.

A variety of free draws will be available.
