City Launches Aboriginal Housing Initiative

Monday, November 03, 2008 9:47:00 AM

Aboriginal residents can apply for a grant toward a down payment on a home thanks to a new provincially funded affordable housing program implemented by the City of Grande Prairie.

The Grande Prairie Off-Reserve Aboriginal Home Ownership Assistance Program (AHOAP), introduced today, enables off-reserve Aboriginal people wanting to purchase homes to apply for a grant of up to $20,000.

Twenty- four grants are available. Aboriginal is defined as First Nation, Métis or Inuit individuals.

The initiative was developed after the City application for funding was approved through Alberta Housing and Urban Affairs.

“We are delighted to participate in this program to allow Aboriginal residents to purchase homes for the first time,” says Mayor Dwight Logan.  “It is a key addition to a series of initiatives we are undertaking and have implemented to address affordable housing in our community.”

Eligibility requirements include:

·         At least one applicant must identify as Aboriginal

·         Only one application per Aboriginal Family Household

·         Must not currently own a home or any real estate

·         Must have mortgage approval

·         Must meet income guidelines referenced by the Core Needs Income Threshold (CNIT)

Immediate family members and persons related to members of the Selection Committee are not eligible.

“This program is significant because it allows Aboriginal residents to invest in their own futures through home ownership,” says Community Housing Facilitator Jaime Rogers. “We are pleased to make a difference for these families and individuals.”

Bert Auger, AHOAP Selection Committee Chair, says the initiative is a great opportunity for Aboriginal families. “This program will help successful applicants gain a sense of independence,” he says.

“These individuals fall through the cracks in terms of having the income to purchase homes in ordinary circumstances and yet are ready to make a commitment in every other respect.”

Application enquiries may be directed to Jaime Rogers, Community Housing Facilitator, at (780) 830-5031.  Application forms can be picked up at the City’s FCSS office or access the PDF versions by clicking the links below.

The application process will continue until the funding has been fully dispersed.
