City Bid On York Hotel Successful
The City of Grande Prairie awaits written confirmation from the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta regarding the ordered the sale of the York Hotel to the municipality.
A hearing was held in Calgary today and City Officials received verbal notice from legal counsel that the City’s bid was successful.
Council voted Monday to submit an offer of $1.1 million to acquire the downtown property, which was subject to a court-ordered process due to foreclosure. It is located at 10012-101 Street and was built in 1948.
Possession will occur in 30 days. The signed court order is expected later this week. There is a 20-day appeal period.
Council entered the proceedings with a view to consolidating property in the downtown core. The goal is to guide future development on the hotel site and adjacent to the former Germain Park location on 100 Ave.
“We are examining various options that will help revitalize the downtown,” says City Manager Greg Scerbak. “By purchasing the property itself, the City has positioned itself to determine how the site should be used in the best interest of the community.”
