Nostalgia Highlights Homecoming BBQ And Dance

Who is Grande Prairie’s best Elvis? What lady looks most like Barbie? Who can hula-hoop the best?
These questions will be answered at the City of Grande Prairie’s ‘50s Homecoming Barbecue and Dance on Aug. 2 during contests held between the dinner and the band starting to play.
The event at the Crystal Centre is part of a weekend-long slate of activities to celebrate Grande Prairie’s 50th anniversary as a City. Tickets are still available at the Crystal Centre. Purchases can be made by phone at 780-538-0387 or online at muniportal.ca Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The menu features fabulous ‘50s, food including 8 oz. burgers and root beer floats. A cash bar is available.
“We have put together an event that will take older residents back in time and give the younger generation a picture of how life was back in the 1950s,” says Lois Harper, Manager of Recreation and Culture. “There will be a variety of games from that era and the Sensational Hot Rods are going to be a crowd favourite. The historical vignettes presentation will be a great added touch.”
Homecoming 2008 gets underway with a welcome reception on Aug. 1 at Centre 2000, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
A golf tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2.at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Heritage Tours and a Tea are set for Muskoseepi Park, starting at 2:00 p.m
The slate for Sunday Aug.3 includes a 50 Years Anniversary Breakfast at the Legion, commencing at 9:00 a.m., a 100 Flags Heritage Festival at Muskoseepi Park, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the Hometown Heroes Parade.
It marshals at Harry Balfour School and then moves to Muskoseepi Park, starting at 1:30 p.m. The re-enactment of the delivery of the City Charter gets underway at Muskoseepi Park at 2:00 p.m. There, anniversary cake will be served.

The Aug. 3 movie at the airport is American Graffiti. The cost is $25 per car. Space is limited to 300 vehicles.
On Aug.4, the movie is ET, The Extraterrestrial. It will be shown at Centre 2000. Admission is $5. Patrons to this movie are advised to bring their own lawn chairs.
