Council Balances Needs In Budget Deliberations

Monday, November 10, 2008 4:02:00 PM

City Council has scheduled five days over the next two weeks to do a 2009 mini-budget review and to finalize 2011 capital and operational budgets for the municipality.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Council will consider new additions for 2009 to the three-year budget it passed last December. Then, it will move on to capital expenditures for 2011.  On Nov. 19 and 20, Council will review the City’s 2011 operational budget. Nov. 21 has also been set aside should it be necessary.

“The budget is a fluid document,” says Mayor Dwight Logan. “We have a three-year budget. However, we recognize there are emergent issues and we schedule time each fall to look at these. This is an important process so we can adapt to changing times and concerns from residents.”

During the 2009 mini budget review this week, council will consider additional items referred from its committees.

“We are also looking at 2011 this year because council found that after the election last fall, one of the first key tasks we had was to look at a three-year budget,” explains Mayor Logan. “We decided to do an additional year’s budget so the new Council in 2010 won’t be faced with the same situation.”

Amendments to 2009 and the 2011 capital and operational budgets will be passed at the Dec. 15 Council meeting.

Budget deliberations are scheduled at the Holiday Inn.
