Athletes and Coach Receive Pursuit of Excellence Funding

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 8:14:00 AM

The City of Grande Prairie’s Pursuit of Excellence Committee is proud to support the top level athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers developing their skills in programs in and around the City of Grande Prairie by providing grant funding for travel and development and scholarship funding.

At its May 8th meeting the Committee awarded Athlete Development funding of $1,000 each to athletes Evan Senger in fencing and Micaela Smith in shooting.   Athlete travel funding was awarded to Daniella Alfonso to assist her in her travels to participate on Team Alberta at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.

Team Travel funding of $2,000 was awarded to the Wolves U18 Girls Volleyball team as they made their way to the 2008 Canadian Nationals in Ottawa.

Track and Field athletes will benefit from the Coaching Development funding awarded to Arlene Boyd with the Peace Country Track & Field Club to complete her level 3 NCCP theory training on her way to becoming a nationally certified coach.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to reward hard work, talent and determination,” says Alderman Lorne Radbourne, Chair of the Committee. “We hope that more athletes, coaches and sports groups will apply for funding through Pursuit of Excellence.”

Anyone knowing someone who would benefit from the Pursuit of Excellence fund can check out our website at culture.cityofgp.com or call 538-0386.
