Family and Community Support Services is partnering with the Prairie Art Gallery and the Cool Aid Society to present the 50th Anniversary Youth Art Mural at the Grande Prairie Museum on Thursday, August 21, 2008. The event begins at 5 p.m. and continues until 6:30 p.m.
“Grande Prairie celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008 and the theme of this event and art project were built around this exciting occasion,” says Cheryl Clarke, Youth Community Facilitator. “This mural is important and meaningful because it shows the community that youth contribute in ways that can be artistic and creative.”
The display’s theme is: Celebrating Success: Past, Present and Future.
The 50th anniversary Youth Art Mural was initiated for community groups who provide services to youth to get involved in the Youth Fest 2008: Celebrating Success.
“Through creativity and collaboration, the art project began as an idea to celebrate youth success,” Clarke says.
Partnerships were created between the City of Grande Prairie’s Family and Community Support Services Department, the Cool-Aid Society, Sunrise House, and the Prairie Art Gallery with the Youth Community Committee planning and leading the project. The Cool-Aid Society received 50th Anniversary funding for the initiative.
Youth involved in the project were aged nine to 19 and were participants in a variety of community agencies serving youth. The segments of the mural were collected between May and June.
“The youth chose the materials that would be used, the theme of the mural, and the messages the mural would represent,” says Clarke.
“Each youth took pride in their work and were engaged in this fun and exciting project,” says Clarke. “Each piece is different and unique, representing what youth success means through their personal interpretation.
“The importance of this project is to provide youth with opportunities for different ways of communicating what they want to say and how they see their world. This project is positive, driven and focused on the strengths of youth today. It has been a sincere pleasure working with these young people. They are making a positive difference in our community.”
