The Aquatics and Wellness Multiplex is a go!
The tender for construction of the facility was awarded today by City Council to Wright Construction Western Inc. of Saskatoon for $98,179,295, resulting in a $20 annual increase to the average property owner in 2011 and 2012, or $1.66 per month.
The total project cost is $109.6 million.
“This is a momentous day in Grande Prairie,” says Mayor Dwight Logan. “This is a much-needed facility to address aquatics and recreation needs for people of all ages in the region and it will be a fabulous attraction for visitors. The public has been anticipating this news.”
Funding for the overall project, including building the structure, construction contingency, design costs, and furniture, fixtures and equipment is recommended to come from a $61.5 million debenture along with $21.4 million from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, $6.2 million in fundraising, $2.8 million from capital reserves, $1.1 million in Aquatera dividends, and a $1 million Major Community Facilities Program grant.
Wright Construction originally submitted a bid of $104,273,000 for the facility. Administration worked with the firm to reduce that cost by about $6 million.
The multiplex will be part of the Community Knowledge Campus and connect to the Coca-Cola Centre, the Gymniks building and St. Joseph High School at 68th Ave. and Wapiti Road. Construction on the venue could take up to 32 months. Construction is expected to begin later this fall.
“There is great excitement in the community for this project,” says Felix Seiler, Community Development Co-ordinator. “People are eager to know when we will get started and when the facility will be ready to use.”
Administration will continue to pursue further grant possibilities from all levels of government. Additional funds received would be applied against the debenture amount.
