Fire Safety Inspections
GPFD is committed to the safety of the citizens of Grande Prairie.
There are 68 staff certified as Fire Safety Codes Officers within the fire department.
The Fire Prevention Branch heads up all fire inspections. The Branch is compromised of one Fire Marshal and four Fire Prevention Officers who conduct routine fire safety inspections throughout the City on buildings under construction, new buildings and existing building.
How often are commercial properties inspected?
Inspections are classified as per the Alberta Building Code Classification. The type of occupancy and the frequency of inspections range from every year to two years.
The Grande Prairie Fire Department is accredited by the Safety Codes Council of Alberta to conduct inspections/investigations and is able to enforce the Alberta Fire Code.
The purpose of fire inspections are to identify potential fire hazards and ensure maintenance of all emergency systems within buildings. The first stage of inspection is considered a public education opportunity to discuss with owners/managers good fire prevention practices and as a resource to develop ongoing programs.
