City Seeking Community Input on Heritage Day Theme for Celebrations on July 31

The City of Grande Prairie invites the community to join in celebrating Heritage Day with a variety of activities taking place between the Grande Prairie Museum and Muskoseepi Park on Saturday, July 31.

The event feature historical demonstrations and performances, a live art contest, live music, food trucks and a virtual scavenger hunt.

Ahead of the event, the community is invited to participate in choosing this year’s Heritage Day theme. The choices are:

  • The Cultures of the Peace Region
  • The City of Champions
  • Swan City Wildlife

Residents can vote by visiting the Muskoseepi Park Facebook page from July 12 through 19 and commenting their favorite on event posts.

Heritage Hunter Demonstrations

The Heritage Village at the Grande Prairie Museum is featuring live historical demonstrations known as Heritage Hunters from 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. to immerse guests in an entertaining and educational experience. Guests can view live black-smiths, rope making and participate in authentic letter writing.

Live Art Contests

Near the amphitheatre in Muskoseepi Park, local artists are painting themed artworks from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All artwork will be uploaded to the Muskoseepi Facebook Page for virtual public voting after the event and displayed in the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion for one year. Virtual voting is available until Sunday, August 8 at 11:59 p.m.

Local artists interested in participating in the event and contest can applying by emailing programming@cityofgp.com by July 25 with pictures of two original art pieces. Limited spots are available; all applications will be reviewed, and featured artists will be selected by a panel.

Also, in Muskoseepi Park, food trucks are serving up special Heritage Day themed food dishes while performances by Mearon, a local Metis band, take place on the amphitheatre stage.

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

A virtual Heritage Day themed scavenger hunt is available leading up to the event. The scavenger hunt starts July 19 and ends 11:59 p.m. on August 2. Full details on how to play, complete tasks and win prizes is available at cityofgp.com/heritageday.

All Heritage Day events are free to attend and open to all members of the public from 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
