The City of Grande Prairie is working with the Disabled Transportation Society to ensure accessible transportation services remain in our community and the region. Representatives from the City of Grande Prairie and Disabled Transportation Services board members are meeting Thursday to discuss all potential options to move forward.

As a result of the Handibus Feasibility Study completed in 2018, the City recently issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gauge interest from service providers and to gain an understanding of readiness, capacity, feasibility, and cost if the service was to be offered as a competitive bid. The RFI closed last week and the City is currently reviewing submissions from potential service providers. Submissions from this RFI may also be used to explore future options for accessible transportation throughout Grande Prairie.
In the interim, the City would like to remind all residents that the municipal transit fleet is fully accessible, with every bus equipped with a wheelchair ramp and wheelchair spots.
The City remains confident and committed to improving accessible transportation in Grande Prairie.
City Council previously committed operational funding in the amount of $996,300 to the Disabled Transportation Society (DTS) for 2019. This funding includes grants, fuel and maintenance and has not been reduced since it was approved in the fall of 2018.
The City of Grande Prairie approved a request from DTS at the Community Living Committee meeting on May 28 to advance third quarter funds to enable the society to meet their financial obligations. Based on the information DTS provided to the Community Living Committee, the City of Grande Prairie is confident that the 2019 funding amount is sufficient to sustain operations into the fall.
This funding is part of the over $7 million the City has invested in the society since 2008.
