For over forty years, the provincial and municipal governments have joined together to provide financial resources for preventative social services through Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). Preventive social services are defined as those that “enhance the social wellbeing of individuals and families through promotion or intervention strategies at the earliest opportunity”.
It is administered provincially through the Ministry of Human Services and municipally through our Community Social Development department. The FCSS program is designed to provide preventive community based services, planned and delivered with a strong volunteer component, to address community needs.
The Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) philosophy is based on a belief that self-help contributes to a sense of integrity, self-worth and independence. The programs developed are intended to help individuals in their community to adopt healthy lifestyles, thereby improving community quality of life and building the capacity in citizens to prevent and/or deal with crisis situations should they arise.
The local programs we support through FCSS include:
- Youth Development
- Home Support
- Transit and Recreation Access Program
- Poverty Reduction
- Welcoming and Inclusive Community
- Many more through funding of almost 20 local social agencies !
