The City of Grande Prairie Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an advisory committee open to youth 14-24 years old of all experiences and backgrounds who want to inspire, effect change and have an impact on their community through advocacy and policymaking. YAC contributes to building a society of active and engaged citizens by creating opportunities to connect youth representatives with Council, City boards and committees, and other community agencies in Grande Prairie.

Members are encouraged to provide their input on the issues that matter to them while creating opportunities for more youth to be engaged and involved on community matters such as important events, policies, economic changes, social injustices, infrastructure, etc.

GPYAC receives funding from the municipal and provincial governments towards providing young people in the area with the opportunity to engage in various youth events, skill-building activities and forums.

As the voice of young people in the area, GPYAC is committed to opinions being heard and having key issues addressed. In the past, former Youth Advisory Councillors addressed issues such as:

  • Discrimination
  • LGBTQ+ Education
  • Sexual health education
  • Exploring and promoting youth friendly spaces in the community
  • Apathy is boring: Engaging youth to vote
  • The City of Grande Prairie’s Transit Master Plan
  •  Truth and Reconciliation of the Indigenous People of Canada
