The Fire Code Requirements for the Maintenance of Buildings and Life Safety Systems is a document that outlines the specific requirements for building owners to follow to ensure their property is compliant with the National Fire Code – 2019 Alberta Edition.

The Building Owner’s Fire Safety Requirements document lists common fire safety maintenance requirements, including general requirements, emergency lighting, exit lighting, exit signs, fire alarm and voice communication systems, and emergency planning.

Building owners are responsible for ensuring that their property is up to code and that the persons they hire to install, inspect, test and maintain life safety systems are qualified. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in penalties and fines.

How often are commercial properties inspected?

Inspections are classified as per the Alberta Building Code Classification. The type of occupancy and the frequency of inspections are based on Quality Management Plan priorities set by the City of Grande Prairie. 

The Grande Prairie Fire Department is accredited by the Safety Codes Council of Alberta to conduct inspections/investigations and is able to enforce the Alberta Fire Code.

The purpose of fire inspections is to identify potential fire hazards and ensure the maintenance of all emergency systems within buildings. The first stage of inspection is considered a public education opportunity to discuss with owners/managers good fire prevention practices and as a resource to develop ongoing programs.
