Joint Media Release - The City of Grande Prairie and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie and Area

The City of Grande Prairie and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie are proud to announce an exciting, new partnership to support over 1200 children and parents to visit the Grande Prairie Outdoor Pool this summer at no cost.

The partnership is funded by the Don Gilles Legacy Fund, which provides annual funding for aquatics or senior programming.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie will take bookings for the Outdoor Pool from local non-profits, charities and community groups to use the pool in timeslots from Monday to Thursday between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“Council has always wanted our community to have access to great recreation amenities because of the benefits active lifestyles deliver for the individual and for our broader community,” said Grande Prairie Mayor, Bill Given. “This partnership is an important step forward in creating an opportunity for kids and families to access our new Outdoor Pool, without income being a limiting factor.”

“We are excited to partner with the City to bring this opportunity to local organizations that support the youth in our community,” said Corinne Patterson, Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie and Area. “Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to teach the youth in our programs the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle, and this partnership acts on that goal. 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, we sincerely thank the City of Grande Prairie and the Don Gillies Legacy Fund for helping to bring summertime fun and recreation to the youth in our area.”

Hunt Group with IG Private Wealth Management is sponsoring Big Brother’s Big Sisters of Grande Prairie to provide bathing suits, towels, and treats for those accessing the program.

Agencies who support children and families may book the facility by calling or texting Erika Gilroy at 780-882-1915 or email erika.gilroy@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca.

All agencies and groups accessing the outdoor pool must adhere to The City of Grande Prairie and Alberta Health Services COVID-19 regulations.
