During a special proclamation ceremony hosted at Sunrise House on May 1, Grande Prairie, Mayor Jackie Clayton, officially announced the kick-off to Youth Week 2024, running from May 1 to May 7. In conjunction with the kick-off, the event also featured the unveiling of a community-driven art project created during the City’s Youth Career Discovery Expo.
The Community Art Project, crafted by local youth in collaboration with an artist from the Centre for Creative Arts, consists of sticker transparencies mounted on large acrylic circles. This artwork has been installed in the stairwell connecting the emergency shelter and transitional housing units at Sunrise House, adding a vibrant touch to the space.
"Seeing our young people come together to create something so impactful is truly inspiring," said Mayor Jackie Clayton. "I am incredibly proud of what they've achieved. Youth Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate their talents, aspirations, and the supportive community that helps them thrive."
Youth Week activities will be centered at the Kickstand Connect, located on the lower floor of Sunrise House. This space is designed to be inclusive, offering various wellness activities, workshops, and dedicated areas for music, tech, and more. The space is not limited to those accessing the youth shelter but open to all youth between the ages of 12-24.
The collaboration with the City between Sunrise House and the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights in the art program underscores the community's commitment to youth engagement and support. The City's role in providing resources and coordinating logistics has been vital in enriching the program, ensuring a supportive and creative environment for all participants.
“We are honored to collaborate on this community art project, which not only celebrates the creativity of our youth but also fosters a spirit of inclusion and respect," said Renee Vaugeois, Executive Director of the John Humphrey Centre “This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to promote human rights and dignity through art and engagement.”

As part of Youth Week 2024, a diverse lineup of free, drop-in activities will be available to all youth aged 12-24 at Kickstand Connect, located in the Lower Level of Sunrise House, 10702 110th Street. Here’s a glimpse at some of the engaging and exciting events planned:
