The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has concluded another successful year representing youth in the community.

Highlights from the 2021-2022 term include:

  • Participation in multiple City engagement sessions including Recreation and Culture Strategy, Snow and Ice Removal, and the 2023 Budget.
  • Creating and hosting a virtual Financial Literacy 101 session in partnership with The Debtless Students on March 20, 2022 with 25 youth attending. 
  • YAC Member Daisy Nellis participated in the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21, 2022, with a radio interview on 2DayFM.
  • Hosting of youth-oriented activities in recognition of Youth Week from May 1-7, 2022 in partnership with City facilities and non-profit agencies.
  • Presentation of Youth Engagement Awards.
  • Attendance at a Virtual Youth Summit hosted by the Calgary Mayor’s Youth Council where 19 other youths from across the province attended representing Calgary, Hinton, Leduc, Airdrie, Wood Buffalo, and Grande Prairie.
  • Participation in facility tours on staffing, safety, equipment, and technology that go into creating an excellent guest experience at City facilities including Muskoseepi Park, Aquatera Outdoor Pool, Eastlink Center, Twin Ice Arenas, and City Hall.

2022-2023 Recruitment

Applications to join YAC for the 2022-2023 term are currently being accepted until Saturday, October 15, 2022. Any youth ages 14 to 24 residing in Grande Prairie interested in leadership experience and making a difference in their community would be an excellent YAC candidate.

Once members are appointed at the end of October, they begin their work for a one-year term. The Youth Advisory Council consists of 15 members per term.

Background

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is the voice for the City of Grande Prairie’s youth, engaging with City Council, boards, and local non-profits to collaborate and contribute to important topics from a youth’s perspective. YAC is an opportunity for youth to inspire change across a variety of issues, decisions, events, policies, projects, and more.
