Update on May 26, 2023 - This fire ban was lifted on May 26, 2023.



Effective at 3 p.m. on May 5, 2023 the City of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Department has issued a Fire and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) ban within the municipal boundaries. The ban is in effect due to dry conditions and a lack of significant rainfall in the forecast making conditions in the area an Extreme fire hazard.

Negligence or willful non-compliance may result in up to $10,000 per day administrative penalties under authority of the Alberta Safety Codes Act.

This Fire Ban order will:

- Suspend all fire permits currently issued.

- Require all outdoor fires presently burning whether set under the authority of a Fire Permit or not, extinguished.

- Prohibit the lighting of all recreational outdoor fires, torches, displays, and open burns. (see exceptions)

- Prohibit the lighting of incinerators/ burning barrels.

- Prohibit wood fires in engineered facilities in campgrounds.

- Prohibit the lighting and display of fireworks or the use of exploding targets.

- Prohibit use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs).

CSA-approved or ULC-certified natural gas, propane or electric barbeques/ smokers used for cooking, gas fire pits, and electric catalytic infrared-style heaters are permitted as long as they meet combustible distancing and manufacturer's specifications.

No new open burning permits will be issued until the City and GP Forest Area conditions improve.
